The Burke County
Sheriff's Office will be joining five other counties in an innovative traffic
grant awarded by the Governor's Highway Safety Program. The announcement was
made at a press conference at the Catawba County Justice Center on June 8th
which included dignitaries from across the state.
The $739,000 grant
will be shared between Burke, Catawba, McDowell, Iredell, Davie and Rowan
County. A mutual aid agreement will allow officers to cross county lines. |

|
| |
| Burke County will begin purchasing equipment
after the grant becomes effective on July 1st. The equipment includes two
vehicles, two mobile data terminals, two video cameras, two radar units, two
digital telephones, and other equipment associated with traffic enforcement.
The Sheriff will receive funds to hire two officers beginning October 1st.

| |
| Sheriff's Offices historically have shied away
from working traffic enforcement. Each Sheriff in attendance agreed their
respective agency must expand in order to make North Carolina highways safer.
|
| |
| Guests and speakers at press conference included
Sheriff Philip H. McKelvey of Cambridge, MD, president of the
National Sheriff's
Association; Donna Maynard of the North Carolina Sheriff's Association,
Troy Ayers of the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration; and Joe Parker of the Governor's
Highway Safety Program. |
