Shooting Reported in Northern Burke

Deputies responding to a 911 call located a 29-year-old Georgia man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on January 20th.

According to Burke County detective Stacy Buff, officers found Abel Hinojosa, of 4182 Covington Drive, Covington, Georgia in a vehicle on John's River Road in northern Burke County. A Hispanic man who went to nearby residence to call for help led officers and emergency personnel to Hinojosa.

Hinojosa was suffering from gunshot wounds to the groin and abdomen area. He was transported to Grace Hospital by Burke County Emergency Services and his condition was unknown at the time of this press release.

According to Buff, interviews with other witnesses determined the assault to have occurred at 3674 John's River Road, where Hinojosa and two other persons were visiting Hinojosa's cousin, Renato Rivera Hinojosa.

Buff states that an altercation occurred between Abel and Renato Hinojosa in the driveway. Renato Hinojosa went inside his residence, and as Abel Hinojosa and the two unidentified persons attempted to leave, Renato Hinojosa came back outside, where the altercation resumed. Renato Hinojosa allegedly pulled a small calibre handgun from his waistband and shot Abel Hinojosa several times.

Abel Hinojosa and the two unidentified persons attempted to drive away, but encountered vehicle problems a short distance from the residence. Burke deputies arrived shortly after one of the unidentified males left the stranded vehicle and went to a nearby residence to make the 911 call, according to Buff.

Officers went to the Renato Hinojosa residence but could not locate him. Hinojosa is described as a 31-year-old Hispanic man with black hair and brown eyes. He is approximately 5'8" tall and weighs 190 pounds. Hinojosa was last seen driving a white 1972 Ford truck bearing N.C. license plate FTV-2697.

A warrant charging Hinojosa for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury has been issued, Buff said. Buff requests anyone with information contact the Burke County Sheriff's Office at (828) 438-5500.
