Man Charged After Stolen Vehicle Recovered

Howell Buchanan
A Morganton man was charged with possession of stolen property after Burke deputies located a truck reported stolen in November, 2000.

Howell Thomas Buchanan, 35, was arrested later at an acquaintance's home.

According to Det. David Warlick, the stolen truck was found Thursday by Sgt. Craig Treadway of the Sheriff's Office in the woods behind Mull School on Old Hwy. 18.

The 1960's model truck, owned by Jackie Abernathy, was reported stolen in November of last year as it sat along Interstate 40. Investigators learned that Buchanan was the suspect in the theft of the vehicle.

Upon Treadway's discovery, officers went to a residence on Duckworth Avenue after learning Buchanan was possibly staying there. Deputy Robert Beall received permission to search the residence and found Howell hiding in a bedroom closet, Warlick stated.

Buchanan was placed under a $1,000 secured bond and will have a first court appearance on April 27th.
