Arrests Made in Convenience Store Robbery

Two persons have been jailed in connection with an armed robbery of the Southern Convenience Store in Rutherford College yesterday.

Timothy Bowen

Angie Mayfield

Timothy Brian Bowen, 21, is facing a robbery with a dangerous weapon charge while Angie Stamey Mayfield, 33, was charged with being an accessory after the fact of a felony, according to Burke County Sheriff's Office Detective David Warlick.

At 6:28 PM, the Sheriff's Office received a call from the convenience store clerk, Christmas Edwards, telling that she had been robbed at knife point. Edwards later told officers arriving on the scene that a man came into the store and milled around while she waited on other customers. When the store was free from customers, the man walked to the counter and asked for change for the telephone.

Edwards told authorities she turned to open the register and the man produced a bladed weapon from his pants pocket and demanded the money from the register. She reportedly gave the man approximately $70 in cash.

The man left the store and got into a blue Mustang which was driven by a white female, Edwards told investigators. The Mustang left the parking lot onto Perkins Road.

Deputy Alan Cobb saw a vehicle matching the description approximately five minutes later on Laurel Road in Valdese. After a short chase, the Mustang spun out of control attempting to turn onto Lovelady Road, according to Warlick. The driver reportedly stopped the vehicle and put her hands outside the window.

The suspects, later identified as Mayfield and Bowen were frisked and officers received permission to search the vehicle, Warlick said. Authorities, including a Valdese officer, a N.C. Probation/Parole officer and Sheriff John T. McDevitt, located what appeared to be crack cocaine lying in Bowen's car seat. Officers removed the seat and found a knife matching the description of the one used in the robbery, Warlick stated. Warlick said a search for the money taken from the robbery concluded when Bowen spit $60 from his mouth.

Bowen and Mayfield were positively identified by Edwards later, along with the blue Mustang. Bowen was jailed under a $75,000 secured bond and Mayfield was given a $5,000 secured bond. Both suspects have a first court appearance today.
