Jailer Arrested for Sexual Offense

A Burke County jailer was arrested Thursday night and charged with a first degree statutory sexual offense.

Robert Alan Poteat, 34, of 2572 Gladden Road had been working at the Burke County Jail less than two months, according to Burke County Sheriff John T. McDevitt, when the allegations of the sex crime surfaced.

"Our investigation showed there was merit to the allegations," McDevitt said. "Mr. Poteat's employment was terminated prior to his arrest. We hold a very high standard for our employees, and I will not condone this type of criminal behavior."

Detectives state the charge on Poteat stem from an offense occurring around 1992 with a child. The child was not identified to protect the identity.

"A background investigation prior to his arrest produced no red flags," McDevitt said. "His references checked out well and people said good things about him."

Poteat was jailed late Thursday night on a $100,00 bond and is being held in the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility. His first court appearance is July 27th.

"His employee status with this agency had absolutely no bearing in the investigation," McDevitt said. "He was treated as any other citizen facing these type of charges would have been treated."
