Glen Alpine Man Arrested in Reported Robbery

A Glen Alpine man, also wanted by authorities in Gaston County, was arrested Thursday and charged by Burke County detectives with common law robbery.

According to Detective David Warlick, Phillip Kelly Rhyne (left), 38, of 2610 Orders Street in Glen Alpine walked into Benfield's Small Engine Repair on Morganton Furniture Road and robbed the business of $15 in cash.

An employee of Benfield's, James Keever, told authorities Rhyne telephoned the business and asked for the owner, who was not there. Rhyne allegedly told Keever he was "coming to get the money."

Keever told officers he hid the business's money after the telephone call. Rhyne arrived shortly afterwards and allegedly went behind the counter and attempted to open the cash register. He reportedly went over to a desk and picked up $15 in cash. Rhyne kept his left hand in his pocket the entire time he was inside the business, according to an incident report filed with the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office already possessed a Gaston County warrant on Rhyne for larceny. Burke deputies and Glen Alpine officers later located him at a residence on Linville Street in Glen Alpine.

Rhyne was jailed under a $50,000 secured bond and is awaiting a first court appearance.
