Morganton Woman Facing Felony Charge

Burke County Sheriff's Office detectives arrested a 62-year-old Enola Road woman Tuesday and charged her with three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Barbara Tarlton Toney of 1260 Enola Road is the owner and operator of T & A Construction Company, a business in which criminal complaints had been filed against at the Sheriff's Office, according to Detective Aaron Carver.

The crimes date back to February of 1999, according to Carver. Toney allegedly received large amounts of money from three individuals and failed to produce the construction work she promised, Carver said. Carver stated that Toney misrepresented herself as a licensed contractor to one of the victims, when she in fact was not.

A $5,000 bond was set for Toney, who was taken to the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility and faces a first court appearance Wednesday morning.
