First Union in Eastern Burke Robbed

Two men armed with weapons robbed the Rutherford College branch of First Union National Bank around 10:34 this morning.

The two suspects entered the bank, located on Malcolm Boulevard. They displayed weapons and demanded the tellers to give them money, according to investigators. One of the robbers reportedly made a teller give him her car keys. Both men left the bank in the teller's vehicle along with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Minutes after the robbery was reported to the Sheriff's Office, Sgt. John Hoyle located the teller's vehicle abandoned behind Petroleum World near Interstate 40, approximately one-half mile from the bank. The suspects were not located after hours of searching by Sheriff's Office deputies and officers with the Valdese Police Department.

Detectives stated the bank robbers apparently were assisted by another person that dropped them off near the bank, then picked them up after they abandoned the teller's car.

Witnesses reportedly saw the two men walking on Malcolm Boulevard prior to the robbery. The witnesses said the men were wearing white sweatshirts and white ball caps. One suspect was larger than the other and both men had dark complexions, possibly being of foreign descent.

A teller told investigators the two men had a foreign accent which was possibly Spanish, but said they spoke English very well. The teller also described the larger of the suspects as having a tattoo on his left hand between the thumb and index finger, a thin beard, and stated he was wearing an earring.

Surveillance video seized by investigators revealed the robbery occurred at 10:27 a.m. The robbery report was received by the Sheriff's Office approximately seven minutes later and Lt. Jason Daniels, who is stationed in the Sheriff's Rutherford College Satellite Office, arrived within one minute of receiving the call, investigators said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene. Investigators request that anyone who may recognize the suspects in these photos, or have information as to the identity of the robbers to call the Burke County Sheriff's Office at (828) 438-5500.
