| Man
Wanted in Two States Captured in Burke |
| |
Sheriff's deputies arrested a man wanted in Virginia
and Florida last night near Morganton. The officers reportedly found the man in
possession of stolen motorcycle.
Jerry Wayne Phillips, 21, was stopped
on Jamestown Road by Deputy Lonny Hildebrand as the officer was responding to a
disturbance call at 3704 L. R. Walker Road. Phillips reportedly lived at
the residence and was one of the parties involved in the disturbance. |
 |
|
| A check of the motorcycle revealed it to be
stolen. Phillips, who investigators say identified himself as Captain John
Harrison via a military identification, was arrested. |
| |
| Further investigation showed Phillips had
assumed a military captain's identity and was being sought by the United States
Secret Service for fraudulent activity nationwide, according to
detectives. |
| |
| Officers reportedly found a second stolen
vehicle at the residence where Phillips had been staying on L.R. Walker Road.
|
| |
| The investigation also led to Conover, where a
rental truck and trailer allegedly rented by Phillips was found at the Ramada
Inn. Detectives say the trailer contained an estimated $20-25,000 worth of
various types of property believed to have been obtained using the false
identification. |
| |
| In addition to being held without bond as a
wanted person from Virginia and Florida, Burke County investigators charged
Phillips with two counts of felonious possession of stolen goods; marijuana
possession; no operators license and providing false identification to law
enforcement. A $25,000 secured bond was set for those charges. |
| |
| Phillips remains in the Burke Catawba District
Confinement Center awaiting a first court appearance on Friday. |
