Burke Man Murdered in Home Invasion

Burke County recorded a second December murder last night, the victim being a 40-year-old Morganton man killed after a reported break-in by two armed men.

Donovan "Donnie" Novak Bryant of 4756 David Bryant Road was shot to death at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Monday evening.

Officers responded to the home after receiving a call stating someone had broken into Bryant's home and shot him. Deputies arrived to find family members administering first aid to the victim. Bryant was transported to Grace Hospital where he died, according to a news release.

Sherry Anderson, who reportedly lived with Bryant, was also present during the incident.

Detectives stated two black males knocked on Bryant's door and as he opened it, the men forced their way inside and demanded money, which was given to the suspects. A struggle between Bryant and the men occurred, and Bryant was shot several times.

The investigators are looking into a motive concerning Anderson recently receiving a settlement of less than $10,000 from a civil court case, which the men may have been aware of.

Anderson ran from the residence to a neighbor's home and called for help, according to reports. The suspects had fled the seen by unknown means when deputies arrived.

At the time of this press release, there are no suspects and the case is under investigation by Burke County detectives and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
