Man's Throat Cut; Hensleys Facing Charges

Two Morganton men are facing charges of first degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after allegedly cutting the throat of a Morganton man and threatening to kill his family.

Joseph Harold Hensley (right), 34, of 1965 Baird Circle is accused of cutting the throat of George Setzer, who resides at 4118 River Road in southern Burke County. The incident was reported to the Sheriff's Office at 11:45 on Saturday night.

According to Detective Andrea Whalen, Setzer reported he and his wife, Amy Reid were inside their residence when he noticed a vehicle pull into the driveway. Joseph Hensley reportedly came to the door and asked if he could use the bathroom. Setzer told him to use the woods behind his residence.

Joseph Hensley's brother, Sammy Lee Hensley (right), 32, of 3278 Port Street reportedly exited the vehicle and approached Setzer on the porch, placing the blade of a pocket knife against Setzer's throat. Joseph Hensley allegedly also produced a pocket knife and threatened to kill Setzer.

Amy Reid reportedly walked out onto the porch and the Hensleys told her they had guns and would kill her and her child if she tried to use the telephone.

Setzer and Reid were held at knife point for several minutes, Whalen stated. The two ran after another person fell out of the vehicle and distracted both of the Hensley suspects.

Whalen said Setzer and Reid attempted to slam the door of the mobile home, but the Hensleys forced the door open and came inside, where a struggle took place. During the struggle, Setzer's throat was cut. His neck injury was described as superficial. Setzer also sustained an injury to his wrist.

Sammy and Joseph Hensley fled the residence in an older model gold vehicle, which was later stopped on Highway 18 South by sheriff's deputies. Joseph Hensley reportedly ran from officers but was quickly apprehended. Sammy Hensley was charged with assault on an officer after allegedly striking a deputy in the face during the arrest.

Sammy Hensley was placed under a $25,000 bond with additional charges of second degree kidnaping and resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer. He has a first court appearance today.

Joseph Hensley was jailed under a $1,000 bond on the misdemeanor charges, with service of several felony warrants pending. More charges may be forthcoming, Whalen said.
