Merryman Made False Report, Deputies Say

A Morganton man who reported he had been robbed by two men wearing ski masks finds himself in trouble with the law after he was charged with making a false report to officers.

Robert Wesley Merryman Jr., 25, a store clerk at B&R Stone and Stuff on Jamestown Road, was found by deputies on February 2nd in the store's restroom with his hands bound with rope. Merryman gave a description of the two masked men and told officers he had been choked unconscious by the two, who later fled the store with an undetermined amount of money.

An investigation by Detective Robert Beall of the Sheriff's Office determined the report to be bogus, and Merryman was arrested on February 15th. Merryman was released on a written promise to appear in Burke County District Court. His court date is scheduled for February 22nd.

The Morganton Department of Public Safety assisted in the case.
