Employee of Huitt Charged in Payroll Scam

Burke County detectives announce the arrest of a woman employed at Huitt Mills, Inc. in Hildebran, who was formally charged with seventeen counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Office manager Elizabeth Stillwell Burleson (left), 43, of 1991 Colonial Lane in Hickory is accused of issuing extra payroll checks to herself between November 3, 1999 and March 2, 2001, which reportedly netted her $93,232 from the company.

Officials with Huitt reported the suspected theft in April, 2001, and the investigation led to indictments being issued against Burleson on February 18, 2002. She was arrested last week in Hickory by the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.

Burleson was jailed under a $5,000 bond and has a court appearance on April 8th in Burke County Superior Court.
