Powell Arrested After Gunfight

A Valdese man was jailed after allegedly firing shots at another man during an argument Saturday night.

Bobby Joe Powell (right), 30, of 5172 Mountain View Boulevard, Valdese is accused of attempting to shoot Michael Detter with a shotgun.

Detter told Burke detectives Powell came to his home unannounced around midnight and pulled out a shotgun without warning, firing once at him.

Detter, who lives at 8060 Old Highway 10 in Connelly Springs, stated he began to fight with Powell over the shotgun and forced Powell out of his home, then went back inside and grabbed a pistol.

As Powell was leaving the residence in a vehicle, Detter reportedly fired a shot, which struck Powell's tire.

Deputies arrived minutes later and located Powell's vehicle approximately a mile from Detter's home.

After an investigation, Detective Robert Beall charged Powell with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was placed in the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $50,000 bond and has a first court appearance on March 4th.

Detter received minor injuries during the struggle over the shotgun, Beall said.
