Wilkerson Busted After Berrytown Complaints

Numerous complaints from the Berrytown community, concerned about drug activity in their neighborhood, led to the arrest of a man possessing a large amount of crack cocaine, authorities say.

William Howard Wilkerson, Jr. (left), 20, of 1577 C.V. Johnson Drive was stopped by a sheriff's deputy Friday after members of the Burke County Narcotics Task Force received
information that he was attempting to deliver cocaine.

After stopping Wilkerson's maroon 1998 Chevrolet, deputies reportedly located a large quantity of crack cocaine and an undisclosed amount of currency.

"We were pleased to seize over one hundred rocks of crack cocaine (pictured right) from this individual," said Sheriff John T. McDevitt.

"This is a fine example of how community watch programs can be beneficial to all concerned," McDevitt said. "The residents of Berrytown were instrumental in Wilkerson's arrest."

Wilkerson was charged with felonious possession of crack cocaine and possession with intent to sell and deliver crack cocaine. He was placed under a $25,000 secured bond and has a first court appearance on Monday.

Assisting the Task Force and Sheriff's Office in this case was Tom McManus and his canine, "Dee Dee" from the Morganton Department of Public Safety.
