Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

A deputy who stopped a vehicle for traffic infractions Thursday hit paydirt when the violator's car was discovered to contain a quantity of cocaine, investigators say.

29-year-old Bounpheng Luanglath (left) of 104 Hollar Street, Drexel was arrested and charged with felony trafficking of cocaine. The Burke County Narcotics Task Force reportedly had received numerous complaints concerning Luanglath's involvement in the drug business.

Burke County deputy Tracy Icard, a member of the six county Governor's Highway Safety Program traffic unit, stopped Luanglath's car on Drexel Road at Interstate 40. Detectives with the Task Force responded after hearing the traffic stop.

A narcotics detection dog was brought to the scene and gave officers the probable cause they needed to search the vehicle. The search resulted in the confiscation of approximately one gram of cocaine, which Luanglath reportedly possessed. Investigators say they located an additional one and one half ounces of cocaine inside the vehicle.

After the arrest, the detectives went to Luanglath's residence and reportedly seized another ounce of cocaine, along with assorted drug paraphernalia and cash.

Luanglath was jailed under a $25,000 secured bond and has a first court appearance on Monday, April 15th.
