Rabies Vaccination Clinics Announced

The Burke County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Burke County Health Department and area veterinarians, will be holding several rabies vaccination clinics throughout the county in the next four weeks.

The clinics were established in order to help the public comply with public health laws regarding required vaccinations of all dogs and cats four months of age and older, according to animal control Lt. Clay Roberts.

"Proper vaccination of dogs and cats by licensed veterinarians is extremely important, due to the increasing spread of rabies in North Carolina," Roberts said.

A fee of $7 (cash only) will be charged for each dog or cat vaccinated at the clinics, Roberts said. For those unable to attend a clinic, veterinarians will still offer the same fee at their office by appointment only.

North Carolina state law requires an unvaccinated dog or cat which has bitten a human to be confined at an animal control facility for a period of ten days at the owner's expense. The owner may also be subject to prosecution.

The scheduled clinics are as follows:

May 13th.....7-8 PM
Salem Elementary School (Healthy Petz) 437-4524
Food Lion, E. Fleming Drive (Burke Animal Clinic) 437-0481

May 14th.....7-8 PM

Animal Hospital East Burke 874-8387

May 15th.....7-8 PM

May 16th.....7-8 PM

Note: In case of rain, the clinic will be cancelled and rescheduled for a later date.
