Two Stabbed at Adult Care Center, Man Arrested

Two workers at the McAlpine Adult Care Center on Kathy Road were stabbed this morning, and a resident of the center was arrested on the scene by deputies.

Eugene Lawrence (left), 44, allegedly stabbed two employees with a pocket knife after becoming irate about a procedural matter at the care center, according to a Burke County Sheriff's Office detective.

The two employees, Patrick Barlow and Phillip Leonard, were transported to Grace Hospital for treatment. Barlow was treated for a puncture wound to his shoulder and later released. Leonard underwent surgery to remove the knife, which reportedly had a 3 1/2 blade and was fully imbedded into his left shoulder. Neither of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.

The 911 call was received at 9:29 this morning. Deputies, including Sheriff John T. McDevitt, quickly converged on the scene and arrested Lawrence, who offered no resistance.

After receiving treatment for a cut to his hand which required stitches, Lawrence was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.  He was placed in the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $25,000 secured bond and will have a first court appearance on May 10th.
