An ongoing domestic situation was the catalyst for a mid-morning shooting which left a Morganton man and woman injured yesterday.

Dwayne Tony Fleming (left), of 2817 Mill Race Road was reportedly shot by Tammy Gladden during a domestic dispute at 2911 Mill Race Road.

Deputies responding to a 911 call found Gladden sitting in the front yard suffering from apparent assault injuries. Gladden reportedly
told investigators Fleming had assaulted her.

Investigators state that during the assault by Fleming, Gladden went inside the residence after Fleming was distracted by a passerby who stopped to offer assistance. She reportedly returned with a .38 caliber pistol and shot Fleming in the buttocks.

Fleming left the residence in a jeep and returned to his own residence, where he was located by detectives. He was transported by ambulance to Grace Hospital where he was treated and released for the gunshot wound.

Tammy Gladden was transported by ambulance to Valdese Hospital for treatment of numerous contusions and bruises to the head sustained during the assault. She was treated and released.

Upon Fleming's release from Grace Hospital, deputies arrested him for violating a domestic violence protective order in which he was forbidden from going near Gladden, a detective said.

Warrants were later served on Fleming for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault on a female, and simple assault (on the passerby who stopped to offer assistance). He is being held without bail on the domestic violence protection order violation, although bond was set at $53,000 for the assault charges. His first court appearance is on Friday.

A detective said the case will be reviewed by the District Attorney's Office for possible charges against Gladden.
