Sheriff's Explorer Car Show Tomorrow

The 1st Annual Burke County Sheriff's Explorer's Car and Truck Show will be held on Saturday, November 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Freedom High School in Morganton.

The event, which is also a law enforcement and fire exposition, is being held to raise funds for the Sheriff's Office's "Explorer" program.

"The Explorer program has been an asset to our department and certainly is a great program for youth who are interested in law enforcement," said Burke County Sheriff John T. McDevitt. "There are officers in Burke County now who were Explorers during their teen years."

The Explorer program is affiliated with the Sheriff's Office via the Boy Scouts of America, although females are welcome to be a part of the program. The program is open to ages 14 - 21 and teaches youth about the different aspects of police work.

Registration for the car show will take place from 9 - 11 a.m. and will be classed by decades under original and modified headings. The registration fee is $20. An awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Trophies will be awarded in each class, in addition to awards for the best law enforcement and fire vehicles, and a "people's choice" award.

Law enforcement and fire vehicles are welcome for the event. Vendors are invited to attend upon payment of a $10 fee at the gate. There will be a visitor's parking fee of $2 per vehicle.

No alcoholic beverages are allowed. Freedom High School is located approximately two miles north after taking the Jamestown Road Exit (Exit 100) off Interstate 40. Jamestown Road will become Independence Boulevard, with the school being located on the right.
