Highway Safety Officers Make Drug Bust

A call to the Sheriff's Office about a possible drug transaction in progress led to the arrest of a Connelly Springs man Thursday.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office Traffic Interdiction Team, along with officers from the Valdese Police Department responded to the call at a Phillips 66 station on Malcolm Boulevard in Rutherford College, where they encountered Thomas Ray McCoury (right), 44.

According to Burke County Narcotics Task Force officials, McCoury was found to be in possession of 1/2 pound of marijuana, which was seized by investigators along with an undisclosed sum of currency.

McCoury, of 7116 Knobs Landing Road in Connelly Springs, was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond and will have a first court appearance today after being charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver marijuana.
