Stray Bullet Strikes Citizen

A man reported he was shot in the leg on December 30th while at his business on Sundown Road in Morganton.

Ernest Eddy Huskins reported he heard something strike the building while he was inside. He told detectives when he went outside to investigate, he heard a shot in the distance and felt something hit his leg.

Deputies arrived and searched for the shooter, but were unsuccessful. It was later learned that the building was struck five times by other bullets while employees were inside working.

Detectives and an SBI agent located the source of the bullet, which allegedly had been fired from a residence off Highway 70, approximately 1/2 mile away from Huskins' business.

The investigators found that a 17-year-old teenager had been target practicing behind his home and was unaware the shots were endangering others.

The weapon and ammunition, which the youth had acquired over the Christmas holidays, were seized, an investigator said. The Sheriff's Office will discuss this case with the District Attorney's Office to see if any charges will be levied.

Huskins was treated and released for his injuries at Grace Hospital and Memorial Mission in Asheville.
