Armed Robbery Reported at I-40 Flea Market

A Catawba County man landed in jail yesterday after allegedly pointing a rifle at an I-40 Flea Market vendor and taking some clothes.

Burke County Sheriff's Office investigators charged Lee Jerome Stewart (left), 36, of 1049 6th Avenue Drive, Hickory with one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon. The Sheriff's Office responded to the robbery call at 12:21 p.m. Sunday after a call by the flea market owner.

According to detectives, Sandra Kay Johnson of Piney Road, Morganton was selling clothes at the Flea Market and confronted Stewart with taking some of the merchandise. Stewart reportedly was a vendor in the booth beside of Johnson's and was unknown to her.

Stewart responded by pointing a rifle at Johnson, detectives say.

A cell phone was found at the scene and traced to Stewart, who was later arrested and jailed after being charged with the armed robbery.

The suspect will have a first court appearance this morning and remains in the Burke County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond.
