Reported Stolen Not True; Man Charged |
| |
| Burke County investigators say a man who
reported his truck stolen on January 23rd was being "less than truthful," and
they have charged the man with filing a false report to law
enforcement. |
| |
| James Edward Younts, 22, of 609 Hopewell Road,
Lot #1 Morganton was released on a written promise to appear in
court. |
| |
| Detectives say Younts reported his 1984 Ford
Ranger pickup as stolen between January 22nd and 23rd, and estimated the value
of the vehicle at $1,500. |
| |
| The investigation proved the report to be false,
said one detective.Younts was later arrested and released on his own
recognizance after agreeing to appear in Burke County District Court on
February 3rd. |
| |
| "Quite a few vehicles reported stolen to this
agency prove to be false reports," said Major Lee Turner. "It seems like Sunday
mornings are when we receive the most reports of stolen vehicles. Then later in
the day we find the car wrecked and learn the owner got drunk on Saturday night
and had an accident." |
| |
| Turner stated that he has instructed detectives
and patrol officers to be more wary of these type reports, because many are
filed after wrecks in order to swindle insurance companies. |
| |
| "I forewarn people filing stolen vehicle reports
that they will be charged if the report proves to be false," said desk sergeant
Edwin Norman. "And quite a few people decide not to file the report after being
told this." |
