Man Escapes from Jail Transport Vehicle

Law enforcement officers are looking for an Icard man who escaped from a Burke County Jail transport vehicle this morning around 2:18 a.m.

Johnny Everette Setzer, 31, of 7556 Spann Hill Road ran from detention officers as they were preparing to take him inside the Burke County Jail, according to Major David Pendley of the Sheriff's Office.

Setzer was wearing leg irons, but somehow was able to break a steel chain which attaches between the two ankle cuffs, Pendley said. He is believed to still be wearing the two ankle bracelets.

Setzer was being delivered to the jail from Raleigh along with two other prisoners, who were taken to the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility prior to Setzer's escape.

"As officers opened the door to the van, Setzer bolted and ran. Our officers pursued but were unable to catch him," said Pendley.

Law enforcement officers with the Sheriff's Office and Morganton Department of Public Safety searched the area for hours, but were unsuccessful in the hunt. K-9 handlers said they tracked the man to some railroad tracks near Huffman Street, where the dogs lost the scent, according to Pendley.

Setzer was under a $75,000 bond for breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, and being a habitual felon. He now faces additional charges of escape. He is described as being 5'11", 170 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information on Johnny Everette Setzer is urged to contact the Burke County Sheriff's Office at (828) 438-5500, or the Burke County Jail at (828) 438-5481.
