Basketball Coach Charged with Statutory Rape |
| |
A peewee
basketball coach and past president of the Glen Alpine Recreations
Committee was charged Friday with a sexual offense against a
player.
Investigators allege Stephen Wesley Wilson (right), 38, of 5200 Foreman Street, Morganton became
physically involved with a 14-year-old female he was coaching, with the
relationship progressing into a sexual one last summer. |
 |
|
| On February 24th, detectives began their
investigation into the relationship between Wilson and the girl, which
reportedly began in March, 2002 and turned sexual in July. A detective stated
Wilson was driving the teenager home from practices and away games, which
allowed the relationship to nurture. |
| |
| In addition to peewee basketball, Wilson coached
the AAU Burke Girls Jammers basketball program and was a volunteer with another
school program, according to the detective. He declined to say which team the
girl played for, citing his wish to protect her identity due to her age. |
| |
| Wilson reportedly turned himself in to the
Sheriff's Office after learning of the charges. He was jailed under a $50,000
bond and will have a first court appearance today. |
| |
| Additional charges may be forthcoming in Iredell
County, where some of the offenses allegedly took place, the detective
said. |
