Basketball Coach Charged with Statutory Rape

A peewee basketball coach and past president of the Glen Alpine Recreations Committee was charged Friday with a sexual offense against a player.

Investigators allege Stephen Wesley Wilson (right), 38, of 5200 Foreman Street, Morganton became physically involved with a 14-year-old female he was coaching, with the relationship progressing into a sexual one last summer.

On February 24th, detectives began their investigation into the relationship between Wilson and the girl, which reportedly began in March, 2002 and turned sexual in July. A detective stated Wilson was driving the teenager home from practices and away games, which allowed the relationship to nurture.

In addition to peewee basketball, Wilson coached the AAU Burke Girls Jammers basketball program and was a volunteer with another school program, according to the detective. He declined to say which team the girl played for, citing his wish to protect her identity due to her age.

Wilson reportedly turned himself in to the Sheriff's Office after learning of the charges. He was jailed under a $50,000 bond and will have a first court appearance today.

Additional charges may be forthcoming in Iredell County, where some of the offenses allegedly took place, the detective said.
