Campbell Charged with Armed Robbery

A man accused of the armed robbery of a local convenience store remains in the Burke County Jail this morning.

Chance Clinton Campbell (right), 26, of 3686 Lot 5 TDK Trailer Park, Morganton is charged with robbing the Colonel's Pantry #12 on Tuesday. The store is located at 2185 US Hwy. 70 East in Morganton.

An employee of the store reported that a man
entered the store around 10:28 PM armed with a shotgun. He demanded an undisclosed amount of money from the clerk, who reportedly was able to give authorities a description of the man and his getaway vehicle.

A short time later, officers with the Burke County Sheriff's Office and Drexel Police Department found the alleged suspect vehicle at Austin's #2 Convenience Store, located at the intersection of Zion and Amherst Road.

Campbell was taken into custody without incident, authorities said. A search of the vehicle reportedly yielded a shotgun and other items consistent with the robbery.

A passenger in Campbell's vehicle was identified by authorities but charges have not been filed, a detective said. The robbery remains under investigation.

Campbell was jailed under a $50,000 secured bond and had a first court appearance yesterday.
