Propst Arrested in Convenience Store Robbery

A man is in the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility after being arrested for the robbery of a convenience store early Saturday.

Calvin Douglas Propst, 47, of 2443 Watts Street, Morganton was jailed under a $20,000 bond after detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office charged him with the common law robbery of Colonel's Pantry #12, located at 2185 US Hwy. 70 East in Morganton.

According to detectives, the store clerk called the Sheriff's Office around 4 a.m. and reported a black man came into the store and forced her to open the cash register. The robber allegedly stuck a hard item against her back which the clerk perceived to be a gun, an investigator said.

The man exited the store with an undisclosed amount of money. The clerk told detectives the same man had been in the store a short time earlier and had made a purchase.

Deputies recognized the description given by the clerk as having similar characteristics to Propst, who is well known by law enforcement, a detective said.

Propst was arrested at his home a short time later and reportedly identified as being the robber.

Saturday's incident was the second time in nine days the store had been robbed. Chance Clinton Campbell, 26, of 3686 Lot 5 TDK Trailer Park, Morganton was charged in another robbery which occurred on April 10th.

Two other convenience store robberies have been reported to the Sheriff's Office within the past several weeks. Authorities continue to search for suspects in the robberies of Austin's #2 on Zion Road, and Vasser's Food Store on Highway 64.
