Teague Charged in Eastern Burke Slaying

A Connelly Springs man is in jail under no bond, charged with yesterday's slaying of one of his neighbors.

Shannon Lee Teague, 21, of 8710 Mount Harmony Church Road was charged with murder Tuesday night in the death of Nelson L. "Donnie" Epley. Epley was found dead in his residence by a friend earlier in the day after failing to report to work two consecutive days.

According to Sheriff's Office investigators, it appears Epley, 52, died at his 3154 Harmony Church Street mobile home from massive injuries to the head caused by a sling blade.

Teague was picked up by officers at his workplace for questioning Tuesday afternoon, and charged with the murder a few hours later, a detective said.

Epley was last heard from on Sunday night, according to CID Lt. John Suttle of the Burke County Sheriff's Office, and did not show up for work at Baker Furniture in Icard on Monday morning, which Suttle said was unusual.

Upon the discovery of Epley's body on Tuesday morning, investigators learned his 1994 Ford Ranger pickup was missing. An all-points bulletin was issued for officers in neighboring counties to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

The truck was recovered by Hickory Police Department around 9:30 P.M. last night, Suttle said.

Suttle would not disclose a motive for the homicide.

"I will not compromise the integrity of the case by making speculations, or releasing too many facts about the crime scene," he said.

N.C. State Bureau of Investigation specialists also assisted in the case.

Teague will have a first court appearance this morning in Burke County District Court.
