Two Charged in Robbery of Sid's Market

Michael R. Southard

Paul R. Skjordal

Two men have been arrested in last month's armed robbery of Sid's Market on Dysartsville Road.

Michael Ray Southard, 25, of 5445 Matthew Pond Road, Morganton; and Paul Rickard Skjordal, 21, of 3500 North Grand Street Apt. 14, Ames, Iowa were jailed under $50,000 secured bonds after being charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The two men allegedly entered the store with stockings on their heads around 8:24 a.m. on April 28th, one of them carrying a handgun.

According to authorities, the suspects order a clerk to open the cash register and fired a round into the floor during the robbery. The bandits left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspects reportedly ran to a nearby church and fired another shot at a customer who had followed them. Detectives believe the men left in a vehicle they had left parked in the church parking lot.

Detectives said they received numerous tips during the course of their investigation, with one tip leading the investigators to Skjordal, who lives Ames, Iowa.

Investigators from Burke County traveled to Iowa and spoke with Skjordal, obtaining enough evidence to charge him with the armed robbery, a detective said. Skjordal waived extradition and was transported back to Burke County.

Southard was later arrested after the investigators obtained warrants for his arrest.

Southard and Skjordal have first court appearances in Burke County District Court on May 16th.

Assisting the Burke County Sheriff's Office in the investigation were the Story County, Iowa Sheriff's Office, and the Ames, Iowa Police Department.
