Investigators Seize Mailed Opium

On May 22nd, the Burke County Narcotics Task Force, U.S. Postal Inspector, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) intercepted two packages of cloth place mats reportedly impregnated with 3.5 kilos of opium.

The packages were addressed to a Morganton address, according to authorities, and appear to have originated in southeast Asia. The street value of the opium is estimated to be around $840,000.

Task force officials have not made any arrests, but continue to investigate.
