Whisnant Charged with Filing Bogus Robbery Report

Detectives have charged a 36-year-old Morganton man with filing a false report, after learning his claim of being tied up and robbed by five men was bogus.

Kevin Stacy Whisnant (right), of 985 Lot 5 Enola Road reportedly called 911 at 1:55 a.m. and told Sheriff's Office officials he had been the victim of a robbery. When sheriff's deputies arrived at his home, they found Whisnant tied up with an extension cord, according to Detective Robert F. Beall.

Whisnant reportedly told investigators that five men entered his home wearing military style clothing and ski masks, and robbed him at gunpoint of a home stereo system.

Beall said Whisnant told officers he was forced to carry the stereo to the robbers' getaway truck.

After a short investigation, detectives determined Whisnant concocted the story and subsequently charged him with making a false report to law enforcement.

Deputies served two other outstanding warrants on Whisnant, which were already on file at the Sheriff's Office. He was being sought on assault on a female and communicating threats charges, which were unrelated to the bogus robbery.

Whisnant was jailed under a $1,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Burke County District Court on August 20th.
