DOC Escapee Back in Custody

N.C. Department of Corrections inmate Neal Michael Tregre was captured Wednesday in downtown Charlotte, according to published reports.

Tregre escaped from a BRIDGE road crew off of Old Highway 18 on August 12th, and later kidnaped a woman and her daughter from a residence nearby, according to detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say that while Tregre was inside the residence, he tied up three other children and sexually assaulted the woman prior to kidnaping her and commandeering her car.

The woman and her daughter were released in Gaston County approximately two hours later.

Charlotte police officers reportedly spotted Tregre walking down Tryon Street after a tip was received by NCDOC officials. He was taken back to the Western Youth Institute in Morganton, also known as the "High-rise."

Charges for the alleged rape and kidnaping are pending and the case will be turned over to the district attorney's office for prosecution, according to Sheriff John T. McDevitt.
