Six Charged After Five-Month Long Theft Investigation

Six men have been charged with various theft offenses after sheriff's detectives concluded an investigation this week into numerous break-ins and larcenies, which began in June.

Charged earlier this month were Daniel Wayne Richter, 29, of 1012 2nd Street S.E., Hildebran; Jonathan Harold Reep, 18, of 1846 33rd Street S.W. Hickory; Kenneth Albert Akers, 50, of Garrou Avenue, Valdese; Jamie Dwayne Teague, 29, of 6454 Lost Key Drive, Connelly Springs; Clyde Edsel "Buster" Lambert, 54, of 2362 Starnes Street, Morganton; and Jason Matthew Deal, 26, of 2075 Travis Road, Newton.

Richter, Reep, and Akers, who were charged with one count of breaking, entering and larceny, are alleged to have targeted homes under construction for carpentry tools, and other homes for ATV four-wheelers. Investigators surmise the men were involved in at least sixteen Burke County break-ins or thefts. More charges will be sought through grand jury indictments, a detective said.

Detectives believe the men later sold the stolen items to individuals, mainly in Burke and Catawba County, including Teague, Lambert and Deal, who were charged with receiving stolen goods.

According to detectives, the total amount of property stolen by the men was around $90,000. A moderate amount of the property was recovered and returned to the owners, although some of the stolen items were reportedly taken out of state and have not been recovered.

All of the men have had first court appearances with the exception of Kenneth Akers, who has yet to be arrested. Detectives are requesting anyone who has information as to his whereabouts to contact the Criminal Investigations Division immediately at (828) 438-5506, or via e-mail at cid@burkesheriff.org.
