Infant Injured; Father Facing Felony Abuse Charge

An infant remains hospitalized at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after sustaining non life-threatening injuries this weekend, according to investigators. The boy's father was later arrested and charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.

John Jason Setzer, 23, was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond on Sunday. His address is listed as 6126 Andria Lane, Connelly Springs.

Sheriff's deputies responded to Grace Hospital around 5 a.m. Saturday morning after hospital officials alerted them that a four-month-old child was in the emergency room with suspicious injuries, according to Burke County Detective Becky Brendle.

Brendle said that a joint investigation with the Sheriff's Office and the Burke County Department of Social Services pointed Setzer as the suspect, and a warrant for his arrest was issued and served.

"According to physicians, the child has some bleeding from the cranial or brain area," stated Brendle. "The baby also had fresh and old bruises on his body, as well as some old fractures to the legs which have mended."

Investigators said Setzer told them that the child, who is named Zachary, fell head-first onto a hard floor while sitting in a car seat.

"The doctor told us the injuries Zachary sustained are not consistent with Mr. Setzer's story," stated Brendle. "The father also had no explanation for the old leg fractures."

Brendle said that the baby is expected to make a full recovery, despite the severity of the injuries.

Setzer will have a first court appearance today.
