Suspected Bank Robbers Captured Friday

Victor G. Flores

Paul Buckner

Two men suspected of the robbery of First Citizens Bank in Hildebran were nabbed late Friday afternoon.

Victor Guaerrana Flores, also known as Victor Vargas, 18, of 147 17th Street Place NW, Hickory, and Paul Buckner, 38, of 804 Spencer Road NE, Conover are charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon in the June 24th bank robbery.

Approximately $2,700 in cash was taken in the robbery, according to a story by the Morganton New Herald.

Detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office said a break came in the case after their investigation linked one of the suspects to an abandoned vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly found behind Winn-Dixie in Hildebran shortly after the robbery.

The car was registered to a Colorado resident, according to investigators. The car was traced to another person in Hickory, and that trail eventually led to Flores and Buckner.

Investigators believe that after the bank robbery, the two men left the area in another car after ditching the Colorado vehicle behind the grocery store. Winn-Dixie is located directly behind the bank.

According to detectives, Flores was found late Friday afternoon hiding in the crawl space of a relative's home in Longview. Buckner was also arrested Friday at Lowman's Motel in Hildebran.

Flores' bond was set at $100,000, and Buckner's bond was set at $25,000. Both men will have a first court appearance Monday in Burke County District Court.
