Two Arrested for ATM Demolition; Pharmacy Robbery

Virgil O. Lail

Henry E. Shell

Burke County Sheriff's Office detectives arrested two men today and charged them with last week's demolition of an automated teller machine in eastern Burke County. The pair was also charged on June 23rd with the robbery of a Hildebran drug store.

Virgil Odell Lail, 44, of 7280 Crafton Farm Road, Hickory, and Henry Edward Shell, 47, of 5211 Tom Smith Avenue, Connelly Springs are accused of stealing a tractor trailer and ramming it into an ATM "Cash Points" machine on June 22nd. The ATM is located in the parking lot of the KFC restaurant in Hildebran.

An investigation into the stolen truck and inspection of the ATM machine led to Lail and Shell being developed as suspects, a detective stated.

The men were previously charged with robbery and kidnaping at East Burke Pharmacy. Detectives said the men demanded prescription drugs from an employee, and also physically forced a clerk to the floor during the robbery.

The men were charged today with felony larceny and injury to personal property in the ATM incident. They were given $10,000 bonds in addition to the $100,000 bonds they are under for the kidnaping and robbery charges.

The men will have a first court appearance on July 6th in Burke County District Court.
