Convenience Store Robbed, Suspect Arrested

Detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office believe they have arrested the man responsible for the robbery of a Drexel area convenience store on Friday.

Around 8 PM on Friday, investigators with the Sheriff's Office and Hickory Police Department arrested Michael Kevin Setzer (right), 48, of 408 East Main Street, Drexel at the Royal Inn Motel in Hickory.

According to reports, the suspect entered the Three J's Convenience Store on Highway 70 near Drexel around 2 PM on August 20th. He reportedly pointed a pistol at the female clerk, demanding money. The clerk gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash and the man fled the scene.

The clerk reportedly called for one of the employees of the garage area of the store, and the employee ran after the suspect. The suspect got into a blue Chevrolet Astro van and sped away, according to witnesses.

Investigators later received information about Setzer, who matched the suspect's description as given by witnesses. A license tag number was obtained for Setzer's vehicle, which was later located at the Hickory motel by Burke County detectives.

Setzer was arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was placed under a $75,000 secured bond and placed in the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility. He will have a first court appearance today.

In addition to Hickory Police Department, agencies assisting Burke County in the case were the Drexel Police Department, Valdese Police Department, McDowell County Sheriff's Office, and Marion Police Department.
