Deputy Shoots Man After Responding to Fight

A Burke County deputy answering an early morning fight call in Connelly Springs shot a man who reportedly came toward the deputy with a knife.

Burke County Sheriff John T. McDevitt said Robert Wade Hollars (right), 40, was chasing another man, Vincent Roseboro with the knife when the deputy arrived at Hollars' home, located at 2760 Warlick's Church Road .

The incident occurred around 2:47 a.m., according to Sheriff's Office records.

According to investigators, Deputy Larry McCorkle witnessed Hollars, who was holding a knife, chase Roseboro around a vehicle parked in the driveway. A bloody Roseboro reportedly ran toward the deputy upon his arrival and requested help.

Hollars came toward Roseboro and McCorkle with the knife and did not heed numerous warnings by McCorkle to drop the weapon, McDevitt said. McDevitt said McCorkle fired one shot into Hollars chest after Hollars attempted to stab the officer.

Hollars reportedly staggered into the highway and fell, and McCorkle called for assistance.

McDevitt said the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene to conduct an independent investigation of the incident.

Hollars is listed in critical condition after being transferred to a Catawba County hospital. Warrants have been issued for his arrest for assault with a deadly weapon upon a government official. Other charges are pending per the investigation by the SBI.

Roseboro was treated at the scene for a cut to his hand.
