Man Shot By Deputy Dies

A Connelly Springs man shot by a Burke County deputy sheriff died this morning at a Catawba County hospital, after being on life support since the shooting.

Burke County deputy Larry McCorkle reportedly shot Robert Wade Hollars, 40, early Saturday morning after the man came toward the deputy with a knife.

Burke County Sheriff John T. McDevitt said Hollars (right) was chasing another man, Vincent Roseboro with the knife when the deputy arrived at Hollars' home, located at 2760 Warlick's Church Road .

The incident occurred around 2:47 a.m. on September 18th, according to Sheriff's Office records.

According to investigators, McCorkle witnessed Hollars, who was holding a knife, chase Roseboro around a vehicle parked in the driveway. A bloody Roseboro reportedly ran toward the deputy upon his arrival and requested help.

Hollars came toward Roseboro and McCorkle with the knife and did not heed numerous warnings by McCorkle to drop the weapon, McDevitt said. McDevitt said McCorkle fired one shot into Hollars chest after Hollars attempted to stab the officer.

Hollars reportedly staggered into the highway and fell, and McCorkle called for assistance.

McDevitt said the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene to conduct an independent investigation of the incident.

Warrants had been issued for Hollars' arrest, charging him with assault with a deadly weapon upon a government official.
