Burke County Sheriff's Office investigators believed they have solved a 2003 bank robbery in which a teller was reportedly sprayed with pepper spray.

Investigative leads into the March 20, 2003 robbery of First Citizens Bank in Rutherford College had grown cold, but a promising tip was received last Tuesday, detectives said.

According to Detective Sgt. Becky Brendle, a tip was received on March 15th which implicated Karen Lynn Morris, age 31, of 1515 D South Sterling St. Morganton, and Amanda Sue Cook, age 29, of Route 85 Martha Town, West Virginia in the robbery.

During the bank robbery, a female subject brandished a handgun and demanded money from the teller, according to reports. The female reportedly sprayed the teller with pepper spray and ran from the bank to a waiting vehicle.

Brendle said that Morris was brought in for questioning on March 17th, after interviews and further investigation Cook was identified as a suspect. Sgt. Brendle stated she then issued a warrant and Cook was picked up in Madison County West Virginia.

Amanda Cook waived extradition and investigators picked her up in West Virginia and transported her back to Burke County on March 18, 2005. Both women were charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and jailed under a $75,000 secured bond. Their first court appearance was today.
