|
| A robber who pulled a gun and demanded money
from a local convenience store clerk got more that he bargained for; the clerk
produced a gun of her own. |
| |
| Burke County Detective Sergeant Becky Brendle
said that around 3:35 PM on June 5th, a white male entered the Country
Crossroads Convenience Store, located at 4048 Highway 64 South in
Morganton. |
| |
| The man reportedly pointed a gun at the female
clerk and demanded money, but the clerk reached under the counter and grabbed a
gun. The would-be robber ran from the store when the clerk pointed it toward
him, Brendle stated. |
| |
| According to reports, the man ran to a black car
and headed south on Highway 64, but the clerk was able to get the license tag
number and call authorities. |
| |
| The car was registered to Thomas Mauk, 20, of
130 Providence Road, Marion, Brendle said. |
| |
| Officers in McDowell County later located the
vehicle along with Mauk and Christopher Lee Cannon, 27, of 2041 Highway 70
East, Marion. The men were arrested and turned over to Burke County
detectives. |
| |
| Mauk and Cannon were later charged with robbery
with a dangerous weapon and jailed under $75,000 bonds. Their first court
appearance was June 6th. |
