Dalton Nabbed After Chase, B&E Charges Pending

Detectives say the man who eluded officers for hours after a car chase on Thursday afternoon is suspected in numerous break-ins in western Burke County.

Jason Michael Dalton (right), 30, of 5781 Mount Olive Church Road, Morganton confessed to over twenty crimes of larceny and breaking and entering shortly after his apprehension, Detective Robert Beall said. Beall arrested Dalton on Scott Road as officers conducted a 4 1/2 hour manhunt for the man.

According to Beall, deputies with the Burke County Sheriff's Office Community Police Division were on patrol in the Jamestown Road area because of the recent rash of burglaries in the area. The officers were reportedly aware that Dalton was a suspect in the crimes and was driving a small, light-colored truck with dark stripes.

Around 11:30 AM, Deputy David South spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver, who South later identified as Dalton, sped away, Beall said.

After a short chase, the suspect drove into a wooded area off of Mount Olive Church Road and fled the scene on foot.

Officers with the Sheriff's Office responded and set up roadblocks in the area. Sheriff John T. McDevitt also activated the "Citywatch" reverse 911 system, a computer system designed to call residents in the immediate area to alert them of the incident.

Dalton finally emerged from the woods hours later and was arrested by Beall, according to reports.

Dalton was initially charged with several driving charges, which included felony speeding to elude arrest, resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer, driving while license revoked, and displaying a fictitious tag.

Beall said detectives are in the process of preparing grand jury indictments on Dalton for the break-ins and property crimes.

Dalton was jailed under a $3.000 secured bond and remains in the Burke County Jail after a first court appearance on Friday.
