Shooting Suspect Arrested in Ohio

The suspect in a Saturday afternoon shooting of an eastern Burke County woman has been arrested in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Belmont County, Ohio Sheriff's deputies arrested Curtis Elwood Moore (left), 46, of 4650 Mount Hebron Church Road, Connelly Springs, after receiving information from Burke County investigators that Moore might be in their area.

At 2:25 PM on Saturday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office received a 911 call stating that Teresa Jones, 38, of 5411 Miller Mill Road, Connelly Springs, had been shot by Moore, her ex-boyfriend.

According to witnesses, Moore pulled into Jones' driveway and fired a shotgun at her as she ran. Moore allegedly chased after Jones and attempted to fire more shots, but was unsuccessful.

Burke CID Lieutenant Charlie Morris said an investigator interviewed Jones' daughter, who is an eighth-grade student. The girl reportedly told the investigator that Moore had also stuck the shotgun to the back of her (the daughter's) head and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire.

The suspect then fled the scene, witnesses stated.

Deputies and EMS personnel arrived and treated Jones for a minor wound to the back of her head. She was transported to Grace Hospital, where she was treated and released.

On Saturday, Sheriff John T. McDevitt characterized Moore as "a dangerous individual."

"We had a standoff situation with Moore last year," said McDevitt. "We were forced to shoot him with beanbag rounds to subdue him."

Sheriff's Office records show that Moore was charged in 2004 with kidnapping and assault on a female. Deputies attempted to arrest him on those charges, which led to the standoff. He was charged with obstructing and delaying officers after his arrest. The charges were later dismissed, an investigator said.

Pending extradition from Ohio, Moore will be charged with attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, according to Det. Gary Ollis.

Assisting Burke (NC) and Belmont County (OH) Sheriff's Offices in this case were the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Saint Clairsville (OH) Police Department.
