Woman Killed; Husband Held for Questioning

An eastern Burke County woman is dead, and her wounded husband is being held for questioning in connection with her death.

Burke County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 2:08 PM to 5212 Miller Bridge Road. There they found Lori Brower Lail, 43, dead of an apparent gunshot wound to her head. Her body was found lying in the front yard of the couple's mobile home.

Lori Lail's husband, Ronald Wayne Lail (above, left), also 43, was found lying next to the woman with a gunshot wound to his upper arm.

A handgun was found within a few feet of the woman's body, according to Burke County Sheriff John T. McDevitt, who was on the scene.

"This investigation is in its infancy, so we have not made a determination whether this gun was used in the shooting, or if there are any other guns involved," McDevitt said.

Ronald Lail was taken from the scene by deputies and transported to Grace Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was later released and taken to the Sheriff's Office, where he was to be questioned by detectives.

"We don't know the role Lail played in the shooting, if any, at this point," the sheriff said. "He is being detained for questioning, due to a history of domestic disturbances between this couple."

McDevitt said that Ronald Lail was charged late last year with possession with intent to sell and deliver crack cocaine. Investigators are also preparing indictments against him on another drug bust, according to the sheriff, which occurred only a few months ago.

"It's not the best house in the neighborhood," McDevitt told reporters on the scene.

The investigation is continuing, and more details are expected to be announced as they develop.
