Homeowner, Deputy Catch Burglar in Act

Sammy Zane Carroll (left) is once again in trouble with the law, courtesy of an alert homeowner and a Burke County deputy sheriff who reportedly nabbed the 23-year-old fleeing a burglarized Connelly Springs home.

Carroll is facing felonious breaking, entering and larceny charges to the 7671 Rhodhiss Road home of Robert and Monica Parker, according to Burke County Deputy David South.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the residence around 1:26 PM today after Monica Parker arrived home and discovered a side door to her house was kicked open.

South said that Robert Parker arrived home shortly after Monica and found a trail of his belongings, along with four-wheeler tracks leading away from the residence. The Parker's four-wheeler was also missing.

South arrived at the home a short time later, and he stated that as he was speaking with Robert Parker, he heard a four-wheeler crank up in the distance.

"Mr. Parker jumped in his Explorer and headed across the field, and I got into my patrol car and drove down Oak Ridge Church Road," South said. "A few minutes later, I located Mr. Parker, who already had Sammy Carroll subdued."

South said he cuffed the suspect, and a search of the man's pockets revealed jewelry, gloves, and a pocket knife belonging to the Parkers. The stolen four-wheeler was also recovered.

Detectives were called to the Parker home, and found a .12 gauge shotgun on the back porch, along with a .22 rifle on a kitchen counter. The suspect had also allegedly packed up other goods, including additional jewelry, ammunition, and electronics, but left them at the scene.

"Something apparently scared him off before he could take his loot, possibly even the home owners," said one investigator.

Detectives also located another gun belonging to Parker in the woods approximately two miles from the scene.

In addition to the B&E&L charges, Carroll will be charged with felonious possession of stolen goods, felonious larceny of the four-wheeler, three felonious larcenies of guns, and possession of firearms by a felon, said Det. Sgt. Robert Beall. Carroll also is facing probation violation charges, Beall stated.

Burke County Sheriff's Office records show Carroll has numerous arrests for break-ins and thefts. After warrants are served later today and his bond is determined, Carroll will have a first court appearance tomorrow in Burke County District Court.
