Two Arrested in Recent Car Break-Ins

The Burke County Sheriff's Office announced they have made two arrests in several recent car break-ins occurring in Burke County.

On December 22nd, deputies arrested Dallas Junior Benfield (left), 24, of 5283 Hayes Waters Road on two counts of felonious breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, and three counts of misdemeanor larceny. The arrest came after Benfield was allegedly caught in the act of breaking into cars at Brendletown Fire Department.

According to reports, the vehicles' owners were exiting the fire department and saw a man inside one of the cars. The man ran from the burglarized car and got into a 2001 Hyundai Elantra, which was parked along the side of the road. The report states the man drove away onto Conley Road toward Jamestown Road.

The victims (Leslie Hicks, Coyte Abernathy, and Ralph Thorne, all of Morganton), contacted the Sheriff's Office and a detective later located Benfield and the Hyundai at 5033 Scott Acres Street, the report said. Both Benfield and the vehicle were identified by the victims and the man was arrested.

Benfield was jailed at the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $3,100 bond.

Also, authorities announced that Duane Jason Fiedler (right), 21, of 2235 US 64, Morganton, was recently charged with four counts of felonious breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, three counts of misdemeanor larceny, and one count of felonious larceny.

Fiedler is charged with four separate car break-ins occurring September 4th, October 7th and October 10th.

The victims in the cases were Wesley Haney, Adam Michaels, Taylor Motors, and Joshua Carswell, all of Morganton. The burglaries reportedly occurred in the southwestern area of Burke County.

According to detectives, Fiedler was developed as a suspect in the crimes and confessed when questioned by authorities.

Grand Jury indictments will be sought in the near future on both men, an investigator said.
