Arrested for Larcenies in Burke, Catawba |
A 25-year-old Buncombe
County man was jailed this evening after he allegedly swiped money from cash
registers in Burke and Catawba County.
The Burke County Sheriff's Office
arrested Phillip Nathan Carter (right) of 317A
U.S. 70, Swannanoa during a traffic stop near Enola Road, after he was
identified by witnesses as the man who robbed Discount Foods Convenience Store
in Rutherford College around 3:00 PM Friday afternoon. |
 |
|
| |
| According to the witnesses, Carter entered the
convenience store and asked for change for a $10 dollar bill. When the female
clerk opened the cash register, the suspect grabbed an undisclosed amount of
money and ran from the store. |
| |
| Witnesses gave authorities a description of the
vehicle the man left the scene in, which was reportedly driven by a white
female. Burke County deputies stopped the suspect vehicle on Interstate 40 near
the Enola Road exit. |
| |
| Carter was subsequently identified by store
officials as the man who committed the robbery, according to Burke County
investigators, and he was arrested. Officials said that the man had two young
children with him in the car at the time of his arrest. |
| |
| Det. Lt. Becky Brendle said that several
larcenies committed in a similar manner as the Rutherford College case were
reported earlier in the day to the Hickory Police Department. Carter is the
primary suspect in those cases and is facing charges in Catawba County. |
| |
| Carter was charged with felonious larceny in the
Burke County case, and will have a first court appearance on January 9th in
Burke County District Court. |
