Accused Smash and Grab Robber Nabbed

A man authorities say made the holiday season a little less cheery for many local businesses is now in custody, facing numerous breaking and entering charges in several counties.

Timothy Dale Akers, 35, of 217 Morgan Drive, Morganton, is in the McDowell County Jail after a Marion Police officer caught the man using a pay phone, just after allegedly committing another "smash and grab" larceny on Monday.

Burke County had seventeen businesses broken into on December 22nd, and another six on December 31st. In those burglaries, the suspect smashed the front glass and entered the businesses to steal money and merchandise.

Sheriff's Office investigators from Burke, McDowell, and Rutherford County, along with investigators with Forest City and Valdese Police Departments had been working together to solve the crimes, according to a news release.

Those investigators had viewed several surveillance videos from the victimized businesses which showed a suspect wearing a black ski mask, gloves and carrying a crowbar. One video showed the suspect's vehicle, believed to be a white Pontiac Grand-Am.

When apprehended by Marion, Akers had just broken into a business and was using a pay phone approximately two miles from the crime, said Burke County Detective John Huffman.

According to Huffman, the Marion officer was responding to the burglary and spotted the suspicious man. When the officer looked inside the vehicle, he saw a crowbar and ski mask, Huffman said.

Investigators with Burke County traveled to McDowell County on Tuesday and interviewed Akers. Huffman said Akers cooperated with authorities and admitted to the twenty-three break-ins which occurred in Burke County in December.

None of the property has been recovered in the Burke County break-ins, said Huffman.

Akers remains in McDowell County Jail under a $60,000 bond and is cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in the area where he committed burglaries, the news release stated. Charges are pending in those jurisdictions.
