Two Hospitalized in Separate Assaults

Two assaults were reported within the last twenty-four hours, which resulted in hospitalization for two men. The cases are not related, detectives said.

In the first incident, the Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance call Thursday evening around 6 PM at 104 Sara Lane, Morganton.

When they arrived, they found resident Jerry Morgan, 49, suffering from a head wound after an apparent fight with family members, said Det. Sgt. Robert Beall.

After receiving medical attention at Grace Hospital, Morgan was transferred to Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville for treatment of his head injuries. His condition is listed as stable.

The Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigation Division is continuing to investigate, and charges may be pending.

In a separate incident, the Sheriff's Office responded to another fight call at 2:14 AM this morning. The incident occurred at 4852 Joe Powell Road, Morganton.

When deputies arrived, they found Gregg Allen Rogers, 24, of 110 Brentwood Road, Morganton bleeding from two stab wounds to his chest.

According to Det. David South, Rogers was at a party at the residence and became involved in an altercation with Jerry Allen Smith, Jr. (right), 40, of 226 Pete Brittain Road, Morganton.

Rogers was transported to Grace Hospital and was treated for the stab wounds, one which caused the man's lung to collapse, according to South. His condition is listed as fair as he remains hospitalized and is expected to recover.

A warrant charging Smith with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury has been issued. He has not been arrested as of this afternoon.
